Photographing Natural Winemaking: Genúria Wines, Torres Vedras, Portugal

João Jacinto’s vineyard, Genúria in Torres Vedras, Portugal, has been in the Jacinto family for 30 years, where, up until 2022, the family would sell their grape harvests to larger a co-operative. In that year, João and his family made the bold decision to start producing their natural wines, embracing organic viticulture and minimal intervention practices.

Set in the scenic hills just outside Lisbon, the vineyard spans 13,000 square meters, where the family grows their grapes without synthetic chemicals, focusing on preserving the land’s integrity. In 2022, João produced his first wines—a small batch of 2,000 bottles, which sold out quickly. Since then, production has expanded, with new wine varieties like orange wine, red, rosé, Pet Nat, and Palhete being crafted with care.

One of the most memorable moments during my time at João’s vineyard was witnessing three generations of his family working together during the harvest—an experience that beautifully encapsulates their commitment to tradition, quality, and sustainability.
