Underhill Wood Nature Reserve: Rewilding and Conservation Photography in the UK
For the inaugural print edition of The Beautiful Truth Magazine, I photographed Underhill Wood Nature Reserve, a rewilding project dedicated to restoring biodiversity and reconnecting people with nature.
Jonathan Thomson, a conservationist and steward of the land, grew up on a small dairy farm in rural New Zealand, where both the marine and terrestrial natural world shaped his outlook. In 2014, recognizing the urgent need for habitat restoration, he and his wife purchased 16 acres of degraded clay land on the Wiltshire-Dorset border, setting out to transform it into a thriving sanctuary for native wildlife and a space for people to engage with nature.
Through my photography, I documented the evolving landscape—capturing the return of diverse species, the regeneration of native flora, and the impact of hands-on conservation efforts.
“Working with Jody was a pleasure from start to finish. He took the time to understand the brief and supplied me with an extensive breakdown of the objectives and a prospective image list so that I knew we were on the same page. He has the rare gift of being able to capture both the tiniest moments and the greatest vistas, always keeping the story at the centre of his work”.
