Returning to the Land: Regeneration, Climate Solutions and Land Stewardship.

Returning to the Land: A Regenerative Photography Project on Climate Solutions and Land Stewardship based in Portugal.

In 2024, I embarked on a series of personal documentary photography projects to highlight and support those leading the way in regenerative practices, climate solutions, and sustainable food systems.

Returning to the Land is an evolving environmental photography series that celebrates the grassroots resurgence of land stewardship—people reclaiming their connection to the earth through regenerative agriculture, rewilding, and ecological restoration. Through compelling visuals, this project explores how individuals and communities cultivate resilient ecosystems, restore biodiversity, and revitalise rural landscapes.

Exploring Regenerative Practices Through Photography

In a time of interwoven crises, Returning to the Land examines intersectional topics such as:

  • Land access and food sovereignty

  • Regenerative agriculture and permaculture

  • Biodiversity restoration and rewilding

  • Soil health and climate adaptation

  • Sustainable rural development

This project is a visual documentary on grassroots solutions, aiming to inspire action, promote land connection, and showcase sustainable living. It highlights the incredible regenerative projects emerging across Portugal and beyond, inviting individuals and organisations to rethink their relationship with the land.

Upcoming Stories: Showcasing Inspiring Regenerative Projects

Over the coming weeks and months, I will be sharing some of the following stories from five incredible projects I have photographed, each offering a unique approach to regeneration, organic food production, and land stewardship:

  • Vizinha Regenerative Farm – A local initiative that uses regenerative farming and creates community spaces to upend local food systems in the Mafra area. It is focused on community building and farmers' cooperatives, offering healthy, affordable, and organic food to its local community.

  • La Di Da Di Wines – is dedicated to championing artisanal organic natural wines in Portugal, honouring traditional and low-intervention winemaking and the grapes and the unique environments in which they are grown.

  • The Orchard of Flavours – An ambitious fully edible botanical garden in Tavira, Portugal, dedicated to experimenting with diverse climate-resilient species.

  • Biggest Mini Forest – A decentralised network of mini-food forests empowering individuals to restore biodiversity in small urban and rural spaces.

  • Lugar da Terra – A pioneering project championing low-impact farming dedicated to creating more productive, efficient, and fertile ecosystems full of diversity and life. Based in Torres Vedras and established in 2020, this project follows agroecology, permaculture, syntropic farming, and regenerative agriculture principles.

Each of these projects tells a powerful story of human connection to land, resilience, and regeneration.

Through Returning to the Land, I hope to support grassroots projects and make visible the transformative work of climate-solution initiatives that reimagine land stewardship, inspire ecological restoration, and champion a regenerative future.

If you are an organisation, business, or individual working in regeneration, sustainable food systems, or biodiversity conservation, I’d love to collaborate! Let’s explore how photography can support storytelling, advocacy, and awareness in the regenerative movement.
