Photographing Craftsmanship: James Otter and the Art of Wooden Surfboards

Craftsmanship and sustainability come together in the hands of James Otter, a Cornwall-based surfboard maker and founder of Otter Surfboards. Specialising in hollow wooden surfboards—an environmentally friendly and durable alternative to conventional foam boards—James not only crafts each board by hand but also invites surfers to his workshop to build their own. Working with sustainably sourced timber, his process celebrates traditional woodworking skills while offering a more considered way to engage with surfing.

One memorable detail from the shoot was James’ commitment to his barefoot lifestyle—something that felt a little unusual at first but perfectly reflected his deep connection to natural materials and the environment.

As a photographer, I am drawn to telling visual stories of artisans dedicated to their craft. Through this series, I document James’s meticulous process, the textures of natural materials, and the connection between maker and craft. If you’re looking for photography that captures the essence of skilled craftsmanship, sustainable making, and heritage trades, I’d love to collaborate.
