Photographing Tradition: The Craft of Withy Lobster Pots
In an age of mass production, traditional fishing practices are becoming increasingly rare. But in Cornwall, England, Nigel Legge is keeping one such craft alive. As one of the last fishermen still making withy lobster pots by hand, he weaves these intricate traps from locally grown willow, following a tradition passed down from his father. I set out to document his process, capturing the skill and patience that underpin his work. “If you didn’t make pots, you couldn’t go fishing,” he says with a wry smile, his Cornish accent steeped in heritage. Through this photography series, I explore the beauty of a craft that is at risk of fading from the coastline.
