Exploring Ladakh: High-Altitude Farming, Nomadic Life, and Traditional Food Cultures
for Another Escape Magazine.
I travelled to the remote Ladakh region of India to produce and photography a series of stories capturing the region’s unique landscapes, traditional livelihoods, and deep-rooted connection to the land. What fascinated me most was how communities thrive in this extremely high-altitude environment—through organic farming, apricot cultivation, and the traditions of the nomadic Changpa people.
In the villages, rooftops were transformed into drying beds for golden apricots, an essential part of local sustenance. High-altitude organic farming flourishes here despite the harsh climate, with crops carefully tended using traditional knowledge passed down through generations. Meanwhile, the Changpa nomads move across the rugged plateau, herding pashmina goats and maintaining a way of life shaped by the rhythms of the land.
Through my photography, I documented the resilience and resourcefulness of Ladakh’s people, their connection to nature, and the sustainable practices that allow them to thrive.
